What speed is most common for accidents?

On Behalf of | Jul 5, 2023 | Motor Vehicle Accidents |

Speeding is the cause of death in many accidents that occur in Maryland. This is a hazard that even the most careful drivers can sometimes find themselves guilty of. It is true that accidents can occur at any time of day. They can happen under the most unexpected circumstances. However, many of them happen at a far different speed than people realize.

What is the most dangerous rate of speed

Motor vehicle accidents can certainly occur at any speed. But it may surprise most people to learn that some of the most common crashes are recorded at a rate of less than 40 mph. In fact, these crashes tend to cause the highest number of injuries. Many of these may result in severe or permanent injury or, in some cases, even death.

Several recent studies have shown that crashes at low speeds can result in more injuries than was previously suspected. Many of these happen in rear-end collisions, some of which can occur between 10 to 15 mph. Even at these speeds, the sheer force of the impact can cause damage to your muscles and ligaments.

What injuries can low-speed accidents cause?

Speeding certainly brings with it more than its share of risk. But some of the most severe, such as whiplash, can occur equally often at much lower speeds. Whiplash can result from your head being jerked back and forth, causing pain and stiffness in your neck.

Concussions are injuries when the brain is shaken inside the skull. Even at low speeds, it can cause severe damage to brain cells. Drivers are therefore urged to pay extra attention on the road, no matter what speed they are traveling at.
